Despite losing their quarterfinal games at ITTF World Table Tennis Team Championships that was held in Busan, both the men and women’s teams have secured their spots for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The India men’s and women’s table tennis teams made history on Monday as both the teams qualified for the Olympics for the first ever time on the basis of world rankings. Despite losing their quarterfinal games at ITTF World Table Tennis Team Championships that was held in Busan, both the men and women’s teams have secured their spots for the 2024 Paris Olympics.  “The highest-ranked teams not yet qualified in the latest World Team Ranking booked their ticket to Paris 2024,” the ITTF said.

The World Team Championships had acted as the final qualifying tournament for Paris, and there were seven spots in the team events that remained that eventually went to the next best ranked teams.

India (Ranked 13th), Poland (12th), Swden (15th) and Thailand qualified among women whereas India (15th) Slovenia (11th) and Croatia (12th) qualified among men.

“Finally!!!! India qualifies for the team event at the Olympics! Something I have wanted for a long long time! This one is truly special, despite it being my fifth appearance at the Olympics! Kudos to our Women’s Team who also secure a historical quota!,” Sharath Kamal posted on ‘X’.

This will be for the first time that India competes in the table tennis team event at the Olympics since its inception at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
