VIJAYAWADA: TDP’s Guntur candidate Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar declared assets of Rs 5,785 crore to emerge as the richest candidate in the country so far. The NRI doctor-turned-politician filed his nomination papers on Monday.
Dr Sekhar’s family hails from Burripalem in Guntur district. His father later moved to Narasaraopet where he ran a hotel. Sekhar secured 27th rank in EAMCET and did his MBBS from Osmania University.He then moved to the US for his masters.
After securing a good rank in the medical licensing exam (MLE) in the US, he practised in general medicine for some time before starting an edu-tech company, which provided coaching and study material to students, mainly from India, to help them crack the MLE exam.
A majority of Dr Sekhar’s assets are in the US. The income he received in India for FY22-23 was Rs 3.68 lakh, whereas in the same period he earned Rs 605.5 crore jointly with his wife. He disclosed income of Rs 643 crore and Rs 594 crore to the US tax authorities for FY21 and FY20, respectively.
He and his wife, who is 50% shareholder in the company, took Rs 1,038 crore as line of credit from a bank in the US.
Dr Sekhar, who was aspiring for the MP ticket from Guntur since 2014, got his chance after two-time Guntur MP Galla Jayadev quit politics in Jan this year.
