Mukesh Ambani is known for being the richest person in India, and it’s no wonder then that him and his family are looked up to by many in the country. The Ambanis fascinate people and they often make it to the headlines– be it for their personal or professional lives. In an old interview when journalist Karan Thapar asked Nita what wealth really means to her, especially after becoming an Ambani post her marriage with Mukesh, her answer was quite humbling and awe-inspiring.
“Nita, today as an Ambani, you are one of the richest people in the country. What does money mean to you?,” Karan Thapar had asked Nita Ambani during an interview for his show ‘Face to Face’.
To this, she replied, “You know, often, I’ve been asked or been told that you are probably one of the richest in India, and things. But both Mukesh and myself, we feel that no wealth is an end to itself. It is how you use your wealth– that is more important. And I tell Mukesh all the time, that life is not all about making money or making wealth. Life is actually about making memories, because that is all that you will leave behind.”
Karan then questioned her about her husband, Mukesh’s busy schedule and if he was able to spend enough time with their family. “Does he have the time for that because he has such an obvious commitment to what his father did?,” Karan said. But Nita was quick to respond, saying, “He is now consciously trying to spend a lot of time with me and the kids… He’s been a good father, now he is trying to be a better father”.
Agreeing to Nita’s point of view on what wealth truly means for the Ambanis, Mukesh then added, “This whole business of making memories, it is such a simple statement but I think it is profound. And particularly now after Papa (his father Dhirubhai Ambani’s death)… Like the only thing we have of him are his memories and they are very dear to us… And Nita used to always say this that every moment is important, and that is what life is all about. I understand what she is saying.”
Mukesh and Nita’s humble and honest interview with Karan Thapar was taken over a decade ago, and it has gained much attention on social media again. The Ambani family is much in the news lately after Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s extravagant pre-wedding celebrations in Jamnagar.
