MUMBAI: A day after Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) leader Prakash Ambedkar signalled the end of his alliance with the MVA by announcing candidates for the Lok Sabha polls, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut suggested the alliance was not over by saying their parties shared the same views and that Ambedkar was with the alliance in its fight against the BJP.However, Ambedkar shot back saying Raut was lying and had stabbed him in the back.
“I know that Ambedkar will not directly or indirectly help the BJP. He is still with us in this fight. We share the same views. Elections may come and go but if the country and democracy do not survive, then what elections will we fight” said Raut on Thursday.
However, Ambekar claimed Raut had betrayed him and had planned a candidate against him. In a post on social media platform X, Ambedkar said, “How many lies Sanjay (Raut) is going to spread? If our thoughts are same, then why were we not invited to the MVA meetings? Why have you been holding meetings without inviting any representative of the VBA?”
“Despite being a political ally, you have stabbed us in our back. We know what kind of discussions you had held at the silver oak (the residence of opposition stalwart Sharad Pawar), you had even proposed building a candidate against Prakash Ambedkar in Akola Lok Sabha constituency,” he added.
The VBA had entered into an alliance with the Shiv Sena (UBT) in January 2023 to prevent the division of votes. The VBA had emerged as a major spoiler in the 2019 polls, damaging the Congress-NCP alliance in at least 12 seats.
The MVA claimed it offered Ambedkar 4 seats but he kept making unrealistic offers suggesting he was not committed to the alliance.
Last week, Ambedkar said he had lost faith in the Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) owing to their unequal attitude towards the VBA. However, he offered “complete ground and strategic support to the candidates of the Congress on 7 seats of the Congress’ choice.”
