VARANASI: Transgender Mahamandaleshwar Hemangi Sakhi of Nirmohi Akhara will contest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi on the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM) ticket. The Kinnar decided to contest in the elections to draw the attention of govt and political parties towards the rights of transgenders.
“It’s good to see Modi Ji launching ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign. But neither he nor anybody else have ever thought of any campaign for Kinnars, most of whom, are left to indulge in beggary or flesh trade,” said Hemangi, stressing that at least one seat for Kinnars should be reserved in Lok Sabha and state assemblies to ensure that their voice, issues and concerns reach the appropriate forum, in order to bring them to the mainstream of society. The 47-year-old said, “I respect Modi Ji and admire his works. But I will be contesting against him to ensure that the attention of govt and political parties is drawn towards Kinnars issues.”
Born in Baroda (Gujarat) and brought up in Mumbai, Hemangi came to Vrindavan for her devotion to Lord Krishna, after the demise of her parents and marriage of her sister. Soon, Hemangi gained popularity as the world’s first transgender ‘Kathawachak’. During Kumbh Mela-2019 in Prayagraj, Hemangi Sakhi was coronated as Acharya Mahamandaleshwar. Besides, she was honoured with the title of Bhagwadbhushan Mahamandaleshwar by Akhil Bharatiya Sadhu Samaj on Feb 4, 2019. With the coronation by Jagatguru Peethadheeswar Gauri Shankar Maharaj of Pashupati Akhara, she became the first Kinnar Mahamandaleshwar. She later got associated with Nirmohi Akhada. She was in limelight in 2022 after giving a call to offer Jalabhishek at Gyanvapi.
