NEW DELHI: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday announced candidates for all 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state. Former Team India cricketer Yusuf Pathan is the party’s candidate from Baharampur and former MP Mahua Moitra has been fielded from Krishnanagar.
In a first, the party announced its candidate list for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from a mega rally at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground.
Addressing the rally, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said: “Today, I will bring before you 42 candidates for the 42 Lok Sabha seats in Bengal.”
‘To fight in other states’
Putting to rest all speculation of a possible tie up with INDIA bloc in Bengal, Mamata said the TMC will contest elections alone in the state, and “will also fight in Assam and Meghalaya”.
She added that her party was in talks with Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party for contesting in “one Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh”.
Lakhs of supporters and numerous block-level leaders attended the rally.
Christened ‘Jana Garjan Sabha’, the mega event featured three platforms, including a cross ramp, with Banerjee and TMC’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee taking centre stage as the main speakers.
Who is on the list and who isn’t
Mamata’s nephew and heir apparent Abhishek Banerjee will contest from Diamond Harbour.
Actor Shatrughan Sinha will fight the Lok Sabha elections from Asansol.
Former cricketer Yusuf Pathan has been fielded from Baharampur, a seat currently represented by Congress’ Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury
Nusrat Jahan has been dropped from Basirhat seat (after Sandeshkhali controversy). Haji Nurul Islam has been fielded from the seat instead.
