The authorities acceded to Vinesh’s demands and Vinesh competed in both the categories, securing a spot in the Paris Olympics qualifiers in the 50 kg category but losing in the 53 kg bout.

Vinesh’s demands then led to complains from the wrestlers who were due to compete in the 50kg category, with the wrestlers saying that they had been waiting for more than two hours.

However, Bhupender Singh Bajwa, the ad-hoc committee chairman, had later clarified that the committee had permitted Vinesh to compete in two categories. ‘‘We responded to Vinesh’s request to compete in both categories, the entire committee agreed to accommodate her request and allowed her to participate in both,” Bajwa had told news agency PTI.
