After the spin tango of Kuldeep Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin, fifties by openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal took India to a commanding 135 for one on Day 1 of the fifth Test against England at HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Thursday.

Skipper Rohit (52 batting, 83 balls) and Jaiswal (57, 58b) plundered 104 runs for the opening wicket in just 20.4 overs as India swiftly closed in on England’s first innings total of 218 all out.

India now trail by 83 runs.

Jaiswal got out soon after his fifty, getting stumped by Ben Foakes off off-spinner Shoaib Bashir. Shubman Gill was giving company to Rohit at 26 not out.

Kuldeep (5/72) and 100th Test man Ashwin (4/51) shared nine wickets among them as England were bundled out for a woeful total in their first innings.

Ravindra Jadeja also took a wicket as the Indian spin troika shared all the 10 English wickets.

For England, Zak Crawley offered the lone point of fight with a 108-ball 79.

Day 1 first session:

Kuldeep Yadav struck twice to leave the visitors at 100 for two at lunch. Zak Crawley made a stylish unbeaten half-century after surviving an extended opening spell from the Indian pacers.

The explosive combination of Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah made the ball talk as was to be expected, but after being repeatedly dismissed, Ben Duckett (27 off 58) and Crawley (61 batting off 71) managed to see the first 14 overs of fast bowling.

In route to his half-century, Crawley—who has been England’s most impressive batsman in this series—played some lovely cover drives off the pacers while being extremely deliberate with the shots he chose.

Siraj ended up bowling eight overs in the morning session and Bumrah seven with both conceding 24 runs.

R Ashwin, playing his 100th Test, was the first change before Kuldeep came to bowl in the 18th over.

Despite being hit for two fours off his first five balls, Kuldeep was not afraid to flight the ball and was rewarded as Duckett’s mistimed hit was pouched by Shubman Gill, who took a spectacular catch running backwards from cover.

Like Duckett, Crawley too was beaten by the pacers in the first hour of play but he picked the right balls to flaunt his cover drives. He also survived a close DRS call before reaching his fourth half-century of the series with a boundary down the ground.

In the next over, Crawley stepped out to smash Ashwin for a six over long on.

Kuldeep’s second strike came at the stroke of lunch as Ollie Pope (11) stepped out only to be beaten by the Indian spinner’s googly and to get stumped.

5th Test: India vs England Playing 11

England have made one change in their Playing 11, bringing in Mark Wood in place of Ollie Robinson. For India, pace lynchpin Jasprit Bumrah returned and he replaced Akash Deep in India’s Playing 11.

Rohit Sharma informs during the toss that Rajat Patidar got injured on the eve of the match. This allows Devdutt Padikkal to make debut for India.

Meanwhile, Jonny Bairstow and R Ashwin are all set to play their 100th Test match in Dharamsala. At the age of 37 years and 172 days, Ashwin will become oldest player to reach the milestone.
