TIRUVANNAMALAI: A section of duck farmers killed more than 20 street and pet dogs by throwing chicken waste meat laced with poison at a village near Arni in Tiruvannamalai district. The farmers complained that the street and pet dogs chase and bite the ducks when they take the ducks for feed to nearby vegetation.
A section of them decided to kill the dogs and threw chicken waste laced with poison at the streets where the dogs were furious and chased and bit the ducks.Fourteen street dogs and six pet dogs consumed the poison-laced meat and died. Their carcasses were found in different parts of the village. The owners of the pet dogs who were searching for their lost canine were shocked to find the carcasses on the bund of a lake.
They recovered the carcasses and buried them. They urged the district police and administration to identify the duck farmer who poisoned the dogs to death and initiate stringent action against them. Meanwhile, the villagers managed to identify one of the duck farmers responsible for killing the dogs. They said they let him off after he apologized for his action and promised that neither he nor other duck farmers would indulge in such activity again. The villagers decided not to lodge a complaint after his apology.
