There’s a lot happening in the show called Sugar on Apple TV+. We once again have a show where the moniker is both metaphorical and literal. It’s the name of the protagonist, John Sugar, to be precise. Sugar also suggests sweetness, and our central character in California cockily and charismatically declares he can be good and bad both, depending upon the eyes of the beholder. The circumstances in his life are the complete opposite to his last name, but it also gives the show an opportunity to break into some slick action and breathtaking stunts. And Colin Farrel is having a ball playing this private investigator.

It could be theft, murder, disappearance that mainly leads to a detective or investigator to wear his thinking hat and solve the mystery. Here, it’s the third one. The granddaughter of Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel, Olivia, goes missing and Sugar is the man entrusted with the responsibility to figure what exactly happened and how it happened. And unquestionably, it would lead to many secrets being unearthed in the family.

Style meets suspense

Sugar combines style with suspense. There are swifts cuts and pacy editing, accompanied by a fueled background score that only elevate the proceedings. The central performance that’s followed by reactionary shots of the people with and around (and possibly against him) could be the (saucy and juicy) cherry on the (thrilling) cake. And the ensemble does a fine job of hiding its motives, at least so far so good.

Fascinating and fulfilling

The show
Sugar
has all the staples you have seen in series and films of such nature before. There are usual and unusual suspects, there are monsters trying to be a hurdle in a man or a woman’s job who would never let them unearth the truth, and all this is followed by one cliffhanger after another. But given how stories that revolve around lost and found brim with tension, Sugar keeps you glued to your seats, or maybe in this case, couches and beds.

What next for, and in Sugar?

The hunt for Olivia is on. There are masked faces out to stop him from accomplishing what he wants. The series has set the ball rolling and for anyone who’s gratified by mysteries, Sugar could be the spiciest choice they could make this week.
