The CGF has said in a statement that they were “exploring innovative new concepts” in a bid to revive the Games, while also adding that “multiple proposals” were being considered to host the event.
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) are hoping to announce the hosts for the 2026 Commonwealth Games by May amid the uncertainty over the long-term future of the Games. Last year in July, Australia’s Victoria pulled out of hosting the Games citing increasing costs and more recently, Singapore and
Malaysia
have also withdrawn.
However, the CGF has said in a statement that they were “exploring innovative new concepts”
in a bid to revive the Games
, while also adding that “multiple proposals” were being considered to host the event. The CGF added that they were worked with several Commonwealth Games Associations (CGA) but did not specify the countries that were involved.
“The CGF continues to accelerate work to refresh the Games… including exploring innovative new concepts,” the CGF said in a statement on Monday, as
reported
by the BBC.
“Importantly, we have been focusing on how we can transform the Games to a collaborative and truly sustainable model, minimising costs and reducing its environmental footprint, whilst increasing social impact,’ the statement added.
Despite being offered £100m by the CGF as supporting funds, Malaysia withdrew from hosting the CWG in 2026 stating that those funds would not cover the overall cost of holding the event. UK Sport, a government agency in the United Kingdom, also said that the CWG was also left out of among the 70 major sporting events that Britain wanted to host in the next 15 years.
The 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games’ total cost was close to £780m, with the city council and local authorities contributing around £180m. Birmingham had stepped up to host the 2022 event only after Durban were denied hosting rights after failing to meet important deadlines.
Although there was criticism over the hosting of the event, with former advisor to the Birmingham City Council terming it as mistake to host it, the UK’s Department of Media, Culture and Sport said that a new report found out that the 2022 Games almost contributed £1.2 bn to the country’s economy.
“The report outlines the positive impact and lasting legacy of the Games, which contributed £1.2 billion to the UK economy and £79.5 million in social value,” CGF president Chris Jrnkins told BBC.
“It drove trade and inward investment, created jobs and boosted tourism… the Games were truly transformational,’ he added.
The BBC report also adds that a host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games is yet to be decided after the Alberta government in Canada withdrew its decision for a bid to host the Games.
