KOTTAYAM: Save his penchant for colourful designer kurtas and the occasional visit to his daughter in ‘capitalist’ US, twice former finance minister and four-time MLA Dr Thomas Isaac remains the quintessential communist – a man who leads a Spartan life. He doesn’t own a house, land or gold. These details were provided by LDF‘s Pathanamthitta candidate in the affidavit filed along with his nomination papers Saturday.
The only “high value” asset Isaac, a trained economist and central committee member of CPM, possesses is his collection of over 20,000 books, with a total value of Rs 9.6 lakh, kept in the house where he resides in Thiruvananthapuram, which belongs to his younger brother.
The affidavit further states that Isaac has a deposit of Rs 6,000 in treasury savings bank in Thiruvananthapuram, Rs 68,000 in pensioners’ treasury account, Rs 39,000 in SBI savings account, Rs 36,000 in KSFE Sugama account, and Rs 1.31 lakh as fixed deposit in KSFE.
Isaac has also remitted Rs 77,000 in various instalments of a chit fund in KSFE. Additionally, he has Rs 10,000 in hand as cash and shares worth Rs 10,000 in Malayalam Communications.
Isaac submitted his nomination papers at around 11am on Saturday before Pathanamthitta district collector Prem Krishnan, who is also the returning officer. He was accompanied by minister Veena George, MLAs Chittayam Gopakumar, Mathew T Thomas and Pramod Narayanan. He arrived at the collectorate in an open jeep, accompanied by party workers.
