BENGALURU: The mystery shrouding the death of a 27-year-old Uzbek woman inside her room at Jagadish Hotel on Sankey Road has been unravelled.
Two of the hotel’s housekeeping staff were arrested on Friday on charges of murdering her.
Bizarre motive
The accused thought the foreign woman, identified as Zarina Utkirovna, was carrying lots of cash and robbing her would make them rich instantly.
Zarina, who had checked into Jagadish Hotel on March after flying from Delhi and was staying in a room on the second floor, was found dead on the night of March 13 with injuries on her face and bleeding from the nose. Her iPhone and cash was missing from the room.
Following the investigation, the city police arrested 22-year-old Amrit Sona and 26-year-old Robert, both hailing from Assam and have been working in the hotel for nearly a year. The cops recovered the stolen phone and Rs 20,000 cash from them.
The two accused were arrested just before they could flee from city, an investigating officer said. “The hotel staffers had seen the body around 11 pm on Wednesday night and alerted us. When we visited the hotel and shifted the body, we found that Amrit and Robert were missing and their mobile phones switched off. Still, working on their last tower location and scanning CCTV footages of the area they were last seen, we nabbed them from their hideout. They had planned to leave the city in few hours,” an investigating officer added.
Zarina had flown down to city on March 5 from Delhi, where she had landed on a tourist visa. Her agent, identified as Rahul, had booked the room for her till March 16. It was Rahul who alerted the hotel staffers saying Zarina was not taking his calls after which the staffers opened the door with duplicate key and found her dead.
“Zarina was making cash payment of Rs 5,500 towards the room rent every day. In addition to room rent, she would pay for the food and beverages too. She would hand over the cash to the accused Amrit and direct him to pay it at the cash counter. Amrit had seen Zarina open her bag filled with currency while handing him over the money and thought she had several bags containing money. Amrit told Robert about the cash in the bag and they both decided rob her. On March 13 night, Amrit and Robert knocked on her door in the pretext of attending some repair work. After entering, they smothered her using the pillow. It was only when they search the room did they realise that she only had Rs 25,000 cash with her,” the police said.
Further, police said the doctors who carried out the autopsy said there was no signs of sexual assault or rape on the victim. “However, we are waiting for the autopsy report to confirm this. Also, we have sent the viscera samples to forensic science laboratory for more authentication,” a senior police officer said.
The two have been taken into five day police custody.
