Trinamool MP Sudip Banerjee and party leader Kunal Ghosh seem to have successfully reached a truce ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The development comes after a recent public sparring between the two leaders over the last week.

The standoff seemingly ended with an invitation extended by Sudip Banerjee to Kunal Ghosh for a meeting over tea at the former’s residence, which was accepted by the latter, sources told India Today TV.

After the meeting, Kunal Ghosh said that Sudip Banerjee personally reached out to him and explained that the absence of an invitation to the Trinamool’s North Kolkata district meeting was a clerical error by the MP’s office.

Kunal Ghosh, last week, asked central agencies to probe bank account of the North Kolkata MP in connection with the coal scam.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), Ghosh tagged CBI and the Enforcement Directorate and wrote: “The bank accounts of Sudip Banerjee, MP and payments on behalf of him to Apollo, Bhubaneswar must be investigated. When he was in custody, whether a large amount paid to him or paid to hospital on behalf of him or not, that should be probed”.

Ghosh had also accused Banerjee of being soft towards the Bharatiya Janata Party because of corruption cases.

He also claimed that the TMC MP is not seen by the side of people of his constituency throughout the year and he only “wakes up only when Lok Sabha elections arrive”.

Notably, the truce between the two Trinamool leaders came on the day when senior leader Tapas Roy resigned as an MLA, dealing a blow to the Mamata Banerjee-led party.

Roy, TMC’s deputy chief whip in the West Bengal assembly and a legislator from the Baranagar constituency of north Kolkata, submitted his resignation to Speaker Biman Banerjee in the afternoon minutes after expressing his “deep disappointment and hurt” with his party and its supremo Mamata Banerjee for “deserting him during trying circumstances”.

Roy has been at loggerheads with Sudip Banerjee and was reportedly maintaining distance from the party for a while now. He also slammed the party leadership for not standing by him when his residence was raided by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on January 12 this year.
