Sri Lanka assistant coach Naveed Nawaz stated that they may need to consult with Andy Pycroft, the match referee for Bangladesh’s second T20I against the visitors, to acquire a clear picture of a disputed decision made by the on-field umpire in the game in Sylhet on Wednesday.

The incident unfolded during the early stages of the match when Sri Lankan pacer Binura Fernando induced an edge from Bangladesh batter Saumya Sarkar, leading to an on-field dismissal call. However, upon review, TV umpire Masudur Rahman overturned the decision, citing a lack of conclusive evidence to support the initial call. The reversal of the decision did not sit well with the Sri Lankan camp, particularly assistant coach Naveed Nawaz, who expressed his dissatisfaction with the outcome.

“The on-field umpire had given him out and I am sure the TV umpire got to have conclusive evidence to overturn the on-field umpire’s decision,” said Nawaz. “We haven’t seen the footage or anything like that but it was clear that there was a spike, we saw it on the big screen and we might have to take it up to the match referee and see what actually happened there. The footage that we have got on our screens were not enough to say anything but I am sure the TV umpire had evidence to overturn the decision.”

Soumya was heading back after seeing the spike on the big screen, but TV umpire Masudur Rahman determined that the spike arrived one frame too late to be an edge off the bat, concluding that there was a space between bat and ball when the spike appeared. Sri Lankan players gathered around the on-field umpire for answers. Soumya did not last long at the crease, but the incident did put the visitors on the back foot psychologically.

“I mean it was big issue and the first wicket and it could have given us a head start. Obviously on a track like this any wicket is crucial,” Naveed said.
