East Bengal will take on Mohun Bagan Super Giant on March 10 at the Salt Lake Stadium, in what will be the second and highly anticipated Kolkata Derby of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024. Hailed as one of the most widely popular clashes in Asia, the tension and stakes are already at an all-time high as the two Bengal giants face each other, in hopes of scripting yet another exciting clash.
As the two powerhouses of Indian football meet each other, the current league standings place East Bengal at number 10 and Mohun Bagan in the third spot. However, these rankings will hold little significance as the true focus will be on the side that emerges victorious on Sunday. The clash had many hiccups in its way, which previously saw the game getting postponed citing security reasons.
Following this, Mohun Bagan Athleitc Club (AC) decided to urge fans to boycott the Kolkata derby against East Bengal SC. Their reasoning stemmed from the steep ticket prices set for the away stands, sparking controversy ahead of the much-anticipated match.
Both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan are the only two teams in the current landscape of Indian football to have won a major trophy, with the Kalinga Super Cup and the Durand Cup respectively.
HEAD TO HEAD
East Bengal has never managed to grab a win against Mohun Bagan Super Ginats in the ISL, having lost 6 and drawn one out of their seven clashes so far.
The Red and Gold of East Bengal seem to have found their long-lost rhythm under coach Carles Cuadrat. However, their league position has not been the best example of that. East Bengal still stands 3 points away from 6th place and will be hopeful to bounce back from the last two consecutive losses to Odisha FC and FC Goa with an emphatic victory over their arch-rivals.
Since their haphazard mid-season, which saw their 2023 ISL-winning manager Juan Fernando depart from the club, Mohun Bagan has been in considerable good form. Under their interim coach, Antonio Habas, the defending champions are unbeaten in their last five ISL matches with confidence of continuing the streak with a win against Cuadrat’s East Bengal side on Sunday.
WHEN AND WHERE TO WATCH
Indian football fans can watch the Kolkata Derby live on Sports 18 on Sunday, March 10 from 8:30 pm.
The match can also be livestreamed on the Jio Cinema app.
