LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav skipped Rahul Gandhi’s conclusion of Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra at a rally in Mumbai on Sunday but sent a letter to the Congress MP lauding him for the yatra and said he could not come owing to ‘election preparations’.
Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra assembly, Vijay Wadettiwar, had told reporters on Friday that SP chief had confirmed his participation in the Mar 17 rally.
In Lucknow, Akhilesh held one meeting after another with senior leaders on Sunday to shortlist names of probable candidates for the remaining Lok Sabha seats. He also addressed party workers and leaders at the SP headquarters. He is also learnt to have held an important meeting with some senior leaders of other parties who are exploring the possibilities of joining SP in the coming days.
In the letter addressed to Rahul, Akhilesh acknowledged the grit shown by the Congress leader in taking out such yatra. “Your Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will end in Mumbai today. Only a few can undertake such a journey. Best wishes to your strong resolve,” he wrote in the letter dated Mar 17.
“You began this leg of your yatra from Manipur which is on the boil because of BJP government’s failures. You have sent a strong message from the Northeast against the dictatorial govt,” the letter read. Akhilesh also mentioned Rahul meeting people from all walks of life during the yatra including farmers, youth, women, and the elderly which gave an opportunity to understand their problems firsthand.
“The Election Commission has notified the Lok Sabha polls yesterday and the nomination process in Uttar Pradesh will begin from Mar 20. Due to the preparations related to the nomination of candidates, I am unable to attend the Mumbai event to mark the end of your yatra,” the letter reads.
“I am not just hopeful but fully confident that the people, including farmers, youth, backward classes, Dalits, and women, will uproot the anti-people BJP in this election. The real success of this journey will be BJP’s defeat in this election,” the letter stated.
